Last week I found this Live Map of the Syrian Civil War, the Map will have little symbols pop up and when you click on them it shows a synapse of what happened and a Primary source for the event, it gets updated quite frequently. This is a good tool for helping people follow the Syrian conflict closer.

As we learned in class, Abd al-Malik used coinage reform as a way to unite their territories. Centuries later, ISIS would create their own version of the dinar in an attempt to destabilize the US dollar. In 2015, ISIS was becoming wealthy off of oil sales to customers like the Iraqi government. However, all trade was being done in the US dollar. ISIS wanted to disassociate the US dollar with the oil business. ISIS decided to bring back the dinar, saying “The return of the ultimate measure of wealth for the world: gold – as the [caliphate] surges into the financial sphere.” Although the project was originally successful, after the US bombed many of ISIS-controlled oil fields, the value of the dinar plummeted.
In this article, it discusses the Islamic art collection in the Louvre and it is a total of 17,500 artifacts. One such artifact is a large tile panel belonging to the tomb of Sultan Selim II and the Culture and Tourism Ministry wants it returned to the Hagia Sophia Museum. A very interesting read and it talks about issues on illegal artifacts.

On the surface it appears that the Egyptian economy is in a state of recovery. The nation has had a growth of 5.5% this year, but protests against lack of jobs and high costs of living are beginning to pop up. The president is apparently building presidential palaces unapologetically, and so the people of Egypt are understandably upset at such a foolish use of national funds. Most average citizens are struggling, and the military’s increased involvement in the economy makes it dangerous to try and establish businesses.
